Committed to the present—ever faithful to tradition!

traditions

True, unaltered traditions are undoubtedly among the highest values of any culture. Inspired by our great role models, Archduke Johann and Viktor von Geramb, we aim not only to preserve traditions—especially Styrian traditions—but to actively live them.

A significant milestone was set in 1977, when, on the occasion of the 700th anniversary of Bruck an der Mur's elevation to city status, a summit cross was erected on our namesake mountain, the 1664-meter-high "Roßeck." Since then, we have held an annual mountain mass at the summit to honor this tradition.

We also contribute to other traditional church festivals:

  • Palm Sunday Blessing of Palm Bouquets in Bruck an der Mur, where young men attach their palm bouquets to poles up to 8 meters high.
  • Easter Cross Bonfire on Holy Saturday at Pischkberg, accompanied by a traditional torch procession.
  • Harvest Thanksgiving Festival (Erntedankfest).
  • All Saints' Day Remembrance of the Dead (Totengedenken zu Allerheiligen).

Some General Customs We Preserve

  • "Sauschädl Stealing" and Negotiations – a rustic carnival tradition.
  • Maypole raising on the main square, with the wreath handwoven by our women.
  • Solstice Bonfires, also known as St. John's Bonfires, celebrating the summer solstice. Maypole Cutting after its display period.
  • Wedding Traditions, including unique customs to honor the newlyweds.

These customs are an integral part of our efforts to keep traditional practices alive and vibrant.
