Customs and Traditions in Styria

Real, unspoilt traditions and customs count as the greatest possession a Culture can own.
As was the intention of our role-models, Archduke Johann and Viktor von Geramb, we wish to keep our traditions alive.
In 1977, to celebrate 700 years of the town of Bruck a d Mur, we erected a cross on the peak (at 1664m) of our namesake the Rosseck. Annually a Mass is held there.
Other traditional, religious festivals are celebrated with our help:

  • the blessing of ‘palm bushes’ (over 8m high catkin arrangements) on Palm Sunday
  • traditional torch procession to the Easter Bonfire on Easter Saturday
  • Harvest Festival
  • Remembrance Day on All Hallow’s Day (1st November)

Also other general customs upheld are:

  • the stealing of the hog’s head and ‘trial’ thereof (an ethnic Carnival tradition)
  • the decorating and erecting of the Maypole on Mayday
  • the celebration of Summer Solstice and Midsummer’s Eve bonfire
  • the cutting down of the Maypole
  • various Wedding customs
